We recommend bringing in your younger cats and kittens for a thorough examination when first taken into your home and yearly after that. After a complete examination and discussion of your cats lifestyle our doctor may recommend vaccinations, deworming and/or labs including a leukemia and kitty aids test. Our feline friends do a great job of masking pain and discomfort and therefore health problems even in young cats are often missed by pet owners. A few of these health risks unnoticed by owners are fractured teeth, gum disease (bad kitty breath), urinary tract diseases, upper respiratory infections and asthma.
Cats are living longer lives these days and with that comes elderly cat conditions and sometimes a decrease in quality of life that owners attribute to “old age”. Occasionally these older cat “conditions” cause cats to miss the litter box. Often these signs of “old age” may be caused by diseases that can be treated and/or cured with a minimum of medication or food change. Therefore, yearly or biannual lab work is very important to help determine your cats health status in middle and older age because many diseases such as diabetes, pancreatitis, thyroid disorders, kidney failure and infections can only be diagnosed by blood and urine evaluation. Our doctor and staff will check the health of your pet from from head to tail and attempt to discuss all the findings and recommendations with you during the exam.
When you come for your appointment please bring in any medical history you have of your cat, no matter how routine. We are interested in your cats health history for their entire lives, not simply the last year of records. Our staff will ask you many health, behavioral and nutritonal questions during your check-in, but anything you have to add is always helpful. You know your cat the best! No information is too trivial or too small to share, if you are concerned then it’s always worth mentioning!
In some circumstances, our doctors may consult with a specialist on your kitty’s behalf or refer you to a specialist who has advanced expertise in areas such as ophthalmology, orthopedics, radiology, dermatology, internal medicine or surgery.
